Janet Bowler
Janet's paintings are a response to her ceramic practice. They are informed by the gestural marks, the pitted and dry surfaces, and, more recently, the subtle palette of seascape colours derived from clay slips, metal oxides and stains.
'I made my first pot 30 years ago - then sculptural mixed
media vessels followed. I use additions to the clay body that enable me to work
quickly and loosely to capture a sense of spontaneity. For me, the practice of
adding, scoring, reworking, painting and over - painting the ceramic form is an
extension of the drawing process with its rich vocabulary of mark making and
surface treatments'.
